There is more than one way to crack a password, and your options will depend on the encryption method being used for protection. With wifi you will either have wep encryption, which is the older less secure format, or the more common wpa/wpa2 encryption which has become the standard because it is very difficult to crack, and can take quite a bit of time to do so. If it is wep encryption the passkey can actually be cracked quite fast and with little effort. Wpa/wpa2 encryption can actually not be cracked at all, but there is the option of using what is known as a brute force, or dictionary attack. A dictionary attack is when you use a program to try an entire list of possible passwords one at a time but with speed much faster than any person could even dream of. Whereas a brute force attack would do the same method of multiple password guesses, but uses a set of characters like a-z. It will try every possible combination until a match is found. This sounds great and should find you what you need, but wpa encryption can be up to 63 characters long. The amount of time it takes to attempt every possible combination can quickly grow into months, and even years if a password is strong. There is a new method that is being used against wpa which has had some success. A program is capable of trying to guess the pin number of a particular router, and once the correct one is found it is able to request access to the network by pretending to be an authorized machine. Keep in mind that all of these techniques have risks, and without an experienced hacker they can actually do damage to equipment and networks. It is also a crime to attempt to crack somebodys password without their consent, and it is a big problem today and is being watched for by the authories. So if you are wishing you could just steal your neighbors password and piggy back off their service for free, then you will want to forget about it and leave it to the pros who use these techniques in a legal manner to help people solve their problems.
